May Newsletter 2010

 June 14th

Dear Parent /Carer

Sports Day

We were very sorry to have to cancel sports day because of the wet weather conditions but have now agreed an alternative date for later this term.

The school had already agreed to be involved in the Gedling 4Uth community event which is being organised for 2 weeks in July, and have planned to provide a range of sporting experiences for children and families to get involved in on Tuesday July 13th. We have decided to now incorporate sports day into this event as well, and have it all on the same day. More details will come out nearer the time.

Staffing Changes

We are very sorry to say that Claire Blain will be leaving us at the end of term to take up a new position at a school in another County. We will be very sad to see her go as she has been a fantastic asset to the school but wish her lots of best wishes for her future.

We are delighted to announce that we have just appointed her replacement. Her name is Marie Harris and she will be visiting school to get to know us and the children on a number of occasions later this term. We were very impressed with Marie at interview and we are sure she will contribute well to school life bringing her own interests, skills and attributes.

Sunshine room

Our Sunshine room located next to the Dining room has received a big ‘make over’ with the addition of a kitchen and new furniture. This room is designated to be mainly used by pupils in the morning but to also serve as a community room for use by you and other community groups at other times. If you are wishing to use the room to meet with other parents or have other suggestions to make regarding use of the room please speak to me. As a result of a request from a parent, in September we are going to organise an after school homework club that you can attend with your child.

Arnold Carnival

Arnold Carnival is being held this weekend on Saturday and Sunday June 19th and 20th at Arnot Hill Park. Lots of activities will be taking place and it should be a fun week end. Some of our children will be performing on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Please do go along and support them. Very sadly I am not able to go myself because of a family event but I know they will be brilliant and do the school proud.

Visual Images Consent Forms

We have had very few of these forms returned to us. It is vital that we do have completed forms for all children. If you need any further information about completing them please do speak to me.

If we do not receive forms by the end of this week we will be sending out more copies and will keep reminding you until we have them all. Please help us by sending them in a.s.a.p. Thank you for your help.

Recycle Day June 22nd

On June 22nd you will be able to recycle unwanted electrical items at school. Special recycling bins are being delivered to the school as part of the Gedling Recycling Week, to put your unwanted goods in.

We have been told that the following items cannot be accepted: batteries, strip lights, fridges, freezers or other large electrical items.

You can recycle goods such as unwanted toasters, kettles, computer equipment, mobile phones, stereos and other smaller items.

Please bring the items to school and place them in the specially designated bins. Please do not leave them by the school main entrance as they will pose a hazard. I am anticipating that the bins will be placed on the path between the main entrance and staff car park but cannot confirm the exact location until they are delivered and we know how big the bins are.

You can only recycle goods on Tuesday June 22nd, please do not bring them on any other day.

We look forward to seeing you in school this week joining in activities with your child on Monday and Tuesday.

Yours Sincerely,

MATTERS DISCUSSED

Actions

Actions to be taken by parent fundraisers must be decided and only acted upon by the delegated person so jobs are not completed twice.

Newsletter

The Parent Fundraisers newsletter has been completed and is planned to be distributed by 21st May - thanks to Teresa.

Cake Stall 27th May

There will be a much loved cake stall and tuck shop as usual at the end of May – so please get baking and bring them in for everyone to enjoy. More stock is needed – so our new delegated buyer will be off to the shops bargain hunting no doubt. Thanks Tracy.

ACTION - TRACY

Sports day 10th June

Refreshments will be provided this year, lets hope the weather is good.

Picnic 13th July

The picnic will take place on this date instead of after the sports day.

Robert Mellors Has Talent

The staff are hoping to run a Talent Contest during the last week of term.

Non Uniform Day 9th July

As we buy items for discos and various events it has been suggested that we get discount cards at various retailers such as Bookers and Cost Co.

ACTION – CARLA & TRACY

Miss Towns Show 25th June

Miss Town has only one date she can fit us in, so preparations are being made with better publicity and events for in-between shows.

Spooky Ball

There is a discussion of a spooky ball taking place in October.

Governers Pop Quiz

This is to be agreed and arranged.

Summerfun Day

T-shirts are being donated for the summer fun day which fundraisers will be wearing, so are easily recognised.

So far the ice cream van and hot food trailer have been booked as well as the inflatable’s.

The event will open with a dance showcase with a Disney theme, followed by another performance by dancers and the chance for participation.

We are working hard this year to promote our summer fun day; there will be flyers being distributed and an advert in the NG5 magazine. A press release for the radio is being drafted.

ACTION - SARA

Letters have been written and sent out informing pupils about the stalls they could be running at the event. Year 2 have already replied.

Tables are going to be available for hire for people to sell products from. Internal charge is £5 and the external charge will be £10. A booking form will be produced to account for each table.

ACTION - TRACY

There will be a bar open and possibly the additional sale of Pimms. Other alcohol has been purchased. Bar licence to be obtained.

ACTION - JULIE

A map of the site is under construction so all the events of the day can be suitably placed, more information is needed for this to be produced.

October 2009 Newsletter

Dear Parent / Carer,

National Walk to School Week

Just a reminder that the week commencing Monday October 19th is ‘National Walk to School Week’. The aim of the week is to highlight that walking to school can be fun, healthy, environmentally beneficial to both children and adults and helps to reduce congestion on roads. It also helps children to learn vital road safety skills. We are hoping that, where possible, you will be able to help promote this week by encouraging your child to walk to school, even for part of the journey. Thank you for your support.

New Lunchtime menu

In response to your feedback we are pleased to announce that the new lunchtime menu will start immediately after half term. This has been attached for your information.  The new menu includes soup which currently we will not be able to serve because the children eat off ‘flight’ trays. A whole baguette will be served instead. There are plans to change to using plates and bowls as soon as possible. If you would like your child to change from packed lunches to a school dinner this is not a problem but the kitchen does need one weeks notice to make sure the right amount of food is prepared. It is also possible for children to have a mixture of packed lunches and school meals providing the arrangements do not change week to week.

Jumble Sale

Thank you to everyone who donated jumble towards our jumble sale and came along to support. This was a big success and the money raised will go towards funding playground equipment.  Thank you too to all the helpers who came along to sort jumble and run stalls on the day. The time you give to school is very much appreciated. The jumble that was not sold on the day will also go to a good home much of it has already been given to charities such as Oxfam. We are hoping to distribute the rest this week.

Harvest Collection

Thank you for your harvest donations. This will go to the charity ‘The Arches’ which supports homeless families or other families in need.  We are still peeling money off the sheets to see how much we have collected so I am not able to tell you how much we have raised yet.

Parent Fundraisers

There are a number of parents who help support the school by raising funds through fundraising activities. The school is very appreciative of the time and commitment that they give. Every bit of help that the group receives spreads the amount of preparation that needs to be done as well as sharing ideas and making it possible to do new activities. The children in school really benefit from all the money that is raised and from the fun in taking part in activities that are run, such as the school disco’s.  The group is in real need of new members to enable it to carry on being as successful as it has been as some members now have other commitments and no longer feel able to continue in the same capacity. You do not need to be able to attend every meeting or get involved in every activity but you are needed. If you can help please leave your name and contact details at the school office. Thank you.

Can I say a big thank you to Gill Smith and Donna Rees who have recently resigned from the parents fund raising group. They have given a lot of support and help for a number of years for which the school is very grateful.

Reminder

The school breaks up for half term on Friday October 23rd and reopens Monday November 2nd.

The school is closed for In-Service training on Friday November 13th.

Before & After Schools Club Survey

This survey is being conducted on behalf of the school to find out the level of interest amongst parents and is something every school is asked to do. I gather that some people have found the survey unhelpful. What we need to know is would you be interested in having this facility in school and if so when (before school, after school or holidays), times needed and how often? If you prefer not to use the survey just write down exactly what sort of requirements you are interested in.  Only should there be sufficient initial interest will the school investigate whether we can meet this need as it would entail adapting existing school facilities, sourcing a reputable provider and resolving other potential difficulties.

Are you free?

The school is very keen to hear from you about your ideas about the sorts of things we could do for you to make you feel more involved or supported in school life or to make the school more welcoming. On Wednesday November 18th in the morning (from about 9 to 11am) we have arranged a ‘Learning Walk’ and discussion session to gather your ideas and feedback. This is being run by someone external to the school so that you can feel open to share your comments and I will not be present for that part. The ‘learning walk’ is a walk around school for you to evaluate the school from a parent’s perspective and to make suggestions or comments. To make the session successful we need about 10 parents in total. If you are interested please can you complete the reply slip below or speak to me personally.  We’ll put on some nice refreshments!

From this session the intention is that we review the comments and suggestions you have made and put incorporate these into our school action plan. It is your chance to have a say so please come.  We will confirm your attendance with you prior to the event. If you can’t make the morning but are still interested in sharing your views please let me know and we can sort another time.

Toddler Group

Finally may I lay to rest the rumour that the Toddler group which is currently run on a Thursday morning is closing. It is NOT. It is a very successful and popular group that will be running for the foreseeable future. The group is however looking for more regular support to help in its setting up and running, perhaps on a rotated basis, to enable other helpers to take up work commitments. If you can help please let the Toddler Group know. Thank you.

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Susan Laplanche
